City & Guilds StartIT.

About StartIT.

The City & Guilds ‘StartIT’ certificate is a basic qualification for beginners — designed and taught specifically for older people with little or no previous experience of computers or the Internet. It is one of the most successful and popular activities we have offered at Hackney Silver Surfers.

We alternate two courses …

  • World Wide Web and Email.
An introduction to the Internet, what you can do with it, and what it can do for you. The ‘World Wide Web’ is the WWW you see everywhere now — a huge repository of constantly changing information. ‘Email’ is what people do when they send messages around the world — instantly and free. We make sure that you have an email address that you can give to your friends and family, so they can contact you wherever they are. There is more to the Internet than World Wide Web and Email, but for most of us that is all we need — and by the end of this course, you will be able to use them as well as most other people.
  • Word-processing with Microsoft Word.
‘MS Word’ is a popular and widely used word-processing package. You might use it for creating, editing and layout of documents such as letters and reports. This StartIT course is an introduction for beginners who might never have done, or even seen, word-processing before. We teach only basic concepts, but few of us ever need more than that.

Our StartIT courses have an unusually high success rate. Nearly everybody achieves the City & Guilds certificate. To join a StartIT course, you only have to commit yourself to two mornings a week for six weeks. If you would like to enrol, please come to The Lawns to fill in the enrollment form, or phone us on 020 7254 2183 for more information.

Our StartIT courses are funded by the Hackney Learning Trust.
